Tomorrow nite France will play Mexico in a preliminary game. Notable because it will be the last time Zidane will play at the Stade de France, where the French won the 1998 World Cup. Very Happy

Addition to trivia: the stand-by goalie for the French team went off in a huff yesterday with his wife and kids and the coach Domenech had to coax him back. He was doing a diva tantrum because Barthez, due to a leg injury, didn't do a climbing exercise the other teams members did. Rolling Eyes

No, they're also called "friendly matches" - kinda training matches among the competitors, just to test themselves against each other. Doesn't count for nothing for the Cup itself but can do wonders for the morale of the teams - if they win.

Look on the website that was posted on the "Poll" thread, the "official WC 2006" site, they'll tell you all you want to know (sometimes more than you want to know. wink )

Hi Everyone,

Do you plan to watch all or most of the games? In HD?

"Friendly matches" are also known was "pre-season" matches in American sports. Before the baseball, hockey, football and basketball seasons officially start, the teams have pre-season matches to warm up as well as to allow the younger players or rookies the opportunity to play and experience pro matches. Teams tend not to bring their big guns out due to fear of injuries.

As for HD, it doesn't make sense to watch HD content when one doesn't have an HD TV set. I am planning to watch the matches at bars with friends and most bars in NY have HD TVs super grin

All, maybe not. Most, definitely yes. HD, no becoz I dun have it. Maybe will do like Tygol and go to bars though rather few in my neighborhood carry soccer games. Back in 1998, the World Cup was a non-event here in the US, nobody seemed to care. But at the time the US didn't have much of a team, they got eliminated almost right away. Even on TV it was difficult to find a station that showed them live (even ESPN) except for Spanish-speaking stations. It was a bit better in 2002 - ESPN, ESPN2, Spanish and French-speaking stations were all showing the games, especially as the finals got in sight.

NY Times has announced it has a blog at worldcup.blogs.nytimes.com - but who needs a blog when we have AV? super grin very happy

Exception to the rule, Zidane, Barthez, Trezeguet and most French big guns played against Mexico a couple of days ago. After that the whole team had lunch with Prime Miniester de Villepin to whom Zidane presented a captain's t-shirt. Kinda difficult to imagine the aristocratic, elegant de Villepin wearing a soccer uniform!! bleh

Question:

Do you like the way the countries are arranged?

Is it possible that two countries could play against each other twice? Even the loser could become the champion?
