Pakistan Reels After ISIS Bomb Kills 88

An attack on a Sufi shrine in Pakistan that killed 88 people Thursday has created fear and turmoil within the country, as dozens of suspects were arrested and nearly 40 killed in sweeping raids Friday. The attack, claimed by the Islamic State terror group, was reported to be the deadliest in the country in years. Islamabad reportedly lashed out at Kabul, blaming the bombing on militant sanctuaries across the Afghan border. Pakistan fired a round of artillery shells into Afghan territory, and shut down the Torkham border crossing. But Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned the shrine attack immediately. “Sufis always preach peace and brotherhood among people,” he said in a statement, adding that “terrorists once again proved that they have no respect for Islamic values.” Pakistani officials said at least 39 suspects were killed in raids on militant hideouts following the attack. An additional 47 suspects were arrested.

Why is Paris putting glass walls around its Eiffel Tower?
The wall may reflect changes in the fabric of Parisian life following terrorist attacks, as officials beef up security and police powers.
David Iaconangelo

February 9, 2017 —Parisian authorities are planning to erect an 8-foot wall of reinforced glass around the Eiffel Tower, in a security measure designed to function as a more aesthetically pleasing replacement of a metal fence that went up last year for the Euro 2016 soccer championship.

Paris officials have also proposed a $318-million modernization of the 128-year-old monument that includes better elevators and lights, more security, and a renovated visitor entrance, according to CNN Money. Officials say that the new see-through panels will afford visitors a view of the monument from the popular Champ de Mars park and the Iena Bridge, unlike the metal fences.

"We will replace the metal grids to the north and south with glass panels which will allow Parisians and visitors a very pleasant view of the monument," the assistant mayor for tourism, Jean-Francois Martins, told the BBC.

The construction seems a symbol of how conspicuous security measures deployed by the French government in the wake of terrorist attacks have gradually become normalized, especially in tourist-heavy Paris.

"The terror threat remains high in Paris and the most vulnerable sites, led by the Eiffel Tower, must be the object of special security measures," Mr. Martins added.

The announcement one week after a machete attack on French troops stationed outside the Louvre Museum ended with the attacker, Egyptian citizen Abdullah Reda Al-Hamahmy, shot four times. He has told officials he wanted to damage paintings and “avenge the Syrian people,” according to Reuters. The museum was reopened last weekend after closing briefly, in what was perhaps a testament to much of the city's “business-as-usual” attitude toward the incident.

The November 2015 massacre in Paris, orchestrated by a man suspected by Belgian authorities of being an Islamic State fighter, was a turning point for security agencies in France and across Europe, with governments considering new means of intelligence-sharing and rethinking privacy safeguards, as The Christian Science Monitor’s Rachel Stern reported last February:

"Intelligence agencies are talking now, both because of the panic and, quite frankly, practically because lives are at stake," said Scott Stewart, vice president of tactical analysis at Stratfor, a global intelligence and advisory firm. "Politically we can’t be seen dropping that same ball again." Before the attacks, only half of the European Union's 28 countries participated in intelligence exchange through Europol, the EU's law enforcement agency, according to press spokesperson Jan Op Gen Oorth. Now all belong, and three are in the process of joining.

In France, the expansion of policing has been particularly aggressive, including the extension of emergency security measures originally put in place after the Paris attacks.

But as the Monitor’s Sara Miller Llana and Colette Davidson wrote in the days after those attacks, some French still worry about going too far toward a “whatever it takes” mentality.

“Not whatever it takes,” Paris resident Antoine Lippen told the Monitor at the time. “It would be too dangerous to block our own liberties when we know terrorist attacks are always cowardly attacks attacking at the place and time you least expect it, so there is always a breach in security, whatever is imposed.”

Police Fatally Shoot Attacker at Paris Airport

Thousands of people were evacuated at France’s Orly Airport on Saturday after a man seized a soldier’s weapon, prompting police to fatally shoot him. French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the man attacked a patrol of three soldiers, wrestling one of them to the ground in a bid to take her weapon. The two other soldiers promptly opened fire. Authorities have determined that the attacker was also involved in an earlier incident near the airport in which he fired birdshot at police officers during a traffic stop and hijacked a civilian’s car. It was not immediately clear what the man’s motive was, but Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux said he was known by both police and the country’s intelligence service. Anti-terrorism investigators have taken over the probe into the attack, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. The interior ministry reassured on Twitter that “the events this morning at the airport caused no injuries.” Authorities took no chances with the latest incident and sent explosives experts to the airport to make sure the attacker didn’t plant any bombs in the vicinity. By about noon local time, authorities had completed their searches of the airport and allowed passengers who had been blocked on board arriving flights during the panic to disembark.

Details:

PARIS (AP) — The Latest on incident at Orly Airport in Paris where a man was shot to death after attempting to seize a soldier's weapon (all times local):

8 p.m.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins has told a news conference that the man who attacked a soldier and was killed by her colleagues at Orly Airport yelled that he wanted to die in the name of Allah and "whatever happens, there will be deaths."

Molins said the attacker held a pistol to the soldier's head on Saturday morning, used her as a shield and succeeded in a struggle to wrest away her powerful military-grade assault rifle. He said the attacker apparently aimed to use it to shoot people in the busy Paris airport.

He says the attacker, identified by Molins as French-born Ziyed Ben Belgacem, also carried a container of gasoline that he tossed to the ground.

‘Terror’ Attack on the Louvre Foiled in Paris

A French soldier has shot and wounded a man who attempted a machete attack outside the entrance to the Louvre in Paris—one of the world’s most-visited museums. The suspect was reportedly carrying two backpacks when he allegedly pulled a knife on the soldier at around 10 a.m. local time Friday and shouted “Allahu Akbar.” The soldier was patrolling the area as part of Operation Sentenelle, foot-patrols that were instituted near major landmarks after the attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Paris supermarket in January 2015. One soldier had a head wound resulting from the exchange. Officers fired five shots at the suspect, who received a “serious” abdominal wound. Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve called the attack “terrorist in nature.” Paris police prefect Michel Cadot said, “We are dealing with an attack from an individual who was clearly aggressive and represented a direct threat, and whose comments lead us to believe that he wished to carry out a terrorist incident.” The Louvre is closed “for the moment,” according to a spokeswoman, but it is unclear if the establishment was evacuated.

Terrorists Planned Dec. 1 Attack on Paris

A terrorist group was preparing an attack on Paris on Dec. 1, with potential targets including a popular Christmas market and Disneyland, Agence France-Presse reported Thursday. The news comes after French authorities nabbed 7 suspected terrorists in raids last weekend, two of whom were later released. Five of the suspects remain in custody as police continue their investigation into the planned attacks. An unnamed source in the police was cited by AFP as saying the suspects had been researching a Christmas market on Champs-Elysees avenue, Disneyland, cafes and a metro station as potential targets. One suspect also reportedly told investigators that an attack was planned at police headquarters in central Paris. Some of the suspects are thought to be taking orders from a jihadist handler based in Syria, and it’s unclear if any others involved in the thwarted attack remain on the loose.

France Thwarts Terror Attack, Arrests 7

French officials arrested seven people who were plotting a terror attack in the country, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said on Monday. Cazeneuve said the attack had been in the planning stages for months. A security official told the Associated Press that the suspects planned to target the Euro 2016 European soccer tournament. Counterterrorism officials were worried that the individuals were going to attack multiple sites at once. The suspects are French, Moroccan and Afghan, between the ages of 29 and 37. All but one were not known to French counterterrorism officials beforehand. The arrests and raids took place in Strasbourg and Marseille

The French are pretty good at thwarting attacks, aren't they?

Paris Airport Attacker to Father: ‘I Screwed Up’

Ziyed Ben Belgacem, the man who allegedly attacked soldiers at Paris’ Orly airport on Saturday before he was fatally shot, told his father that he had “screwed up.” Belgacem was shot dead by soldiers after he pointed a gun to one of their heads and said he wanted to “die for Allah.” He also attempted to steal a soldier’s weapon. Belgacem’s father told a French radio program that his son had called him before heading to the airport to tell him that he “screwed up.” Belgacem, who was on a terror watch list, is believed to have been radicalized in prison, where he ended up after he was convicted on drug and robbery charges.

One Killed, 15 Injured in Shooting at Cincinnati Nightclub

One person was killed and 15 others were injured when a gunman opened fire at a nightclub in Cincinnati, in an incident that police say was not terrorism related. “Saturday night, it is a very young crowd. We have had incidents here in the past, but this is by far the worst,” said Police Capt. Kim Williams, adding that cops were already present at the club as a security detail. Officers tried but failed to save the individual who died. The gunman is still on the loose. “Saddened to learn about last night’s shooting in Cincinnati. Our prayers are with the victims and families of all of those involved,” Ohio Gov. John Kasich tweeted.

This time, it's not terrorism. But it's one more proof that Americans are trigger-happy. They should not be allowed to carry firearms. There are less people dead with knives. Not that it's any better, but any life saved is a victory against violence.

Well, to tell you the truth, Annamite en France, I actually would rather die quickly by a gunshot or a stabbing than being beaten or stoned to death. Bullets and knives are faster.

Not that I wish to die through violence at all, you understand. Just saying. Smile

Palm Sunday Church Bombing Rocks Egypt

An explosion at a Coptic Christian church in northern Egypt on Sunday killed at least 40 people, according to reports. The bomb was reportedly placed underneath a seat inside the St. George Coptic church in Tanta, and exploded during a Palm Sunday service. In addition to those killed, at least 60 people were wounded. A separate blast was reported at a church in Alexandria. The Associated Press, citing Egypt’s health ministry, reports an additional six people were killed in that attack. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the twin bombings.

Egyptian Police Die Protecting Church

Two Egyptian police officers were shot and killed while guarding a Coptic Christian church on Tuesday. The men died instantly after masked gunman fired on them, a local security source and a witness told Reuters. Wednesday marks Coptic Christmas this year, which usually involves tightened security at Egyptian churches. Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt’s population, have lived peacefully with the nation’s Sunni Muslim majority for years. However, following the ousting of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, many Christian churches and properties have been destroyed.
