I know it's not much comfort to our dear LadyDragon at the moment, but they do say that it is better to have loved and lost rather than not having loved at all.

Of course it is better yet to have loved and to be able to continue to do so. But we are all in the hands of Fate.

Dearest LadyDragon, let the memories of the good times, the happy times, the times of joy and laughter be a comfort to you in this most difficult time. hug

Life is so unfair, isn't it?

Why take the life of someone so good, who wanted to live and was happy, when there are so many SOBs on this Earth and so many miserable people who want to die but have to go on living and suffering?

Reminds me of Lamartine's "Le lac":

" Ô temps ! suspends ton vol, et vous, heures propices !
Suspendez votre cours :
Laissez-nous savourer les rapides délices
Des plus beaux de nos jours !

" Assez de malheureux ici-bas vous implorent,
Coulez, coulez pour eux ;
Prenez avec leurs jours les soins qui les dévorent ;
Oubliez les heureux

" Mais je demande en vain quelques moments encore,
Le temps m'échappe et fuit ;
Je dis à cette nuit : Sois plus lente ; et l'aurore
Va dissiper la nuit.

" Aimons donc, aimons donc ! de l'heure fugitive,
Hâtons-nous, jouissons !
L'homme n'a point de port, le temps n'a point de rive ;
Il coule, et nous passons ! "

This also reminds me of a song by Jacqueline Dulac, called "Quand on est heureux" - The premise is that one should die when one is happy ("On devrait mourir quand on est heureux").

It's the opposite of what Lamartine says - let Death take the unfortunate, the unhappy, let those who are happy enjoy their bliss. But there is also something to be said about Dulac's point of view. Dying happy is a good thing for the person going, though it is hard for the one(s) left behind.

From what I understand, when WF's husband went in for his last surgery, his last conscious thought must have been that he'd see his wife and family again in just a few hours. He knew they all loved him, would be there when he woke up. He never did, but his last thoughts must have been happy ones, and that's something to be grateful for. Smile
