Betsy DeVos Says She's 'Misunderstood,' Then Struggles To Explain Her Own Policies
Ed Mazza, HuffPost•March 12, 2018

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos had one of the most contentious confirmation hearings of the Trump administration, with two Republicans voting against her nomination. On Sunday night, she told Lesley Stahl of “60 Minutes” that she’s “more misunderstood than anything.”

However, in the very same interview, the billionaire advocate for school choice, which allows taxpayer funds for public education to be channeled to other schools, including private religious-based institutions, struggled to provide data backing up her signature issue.

DeVos claimed that when kids opt to go to private or charter schools, public schools also improve. Then, DeVos admitted she didn’t know if that happened in her home state of Michigan, where she has long advocated for such programs.

Here’s the exchange:

Yeah, remember, it ended up a tie and it took Mike Pence's tie-breaking vote for her to get the job. Considering what an ignorant idiot she obviously is, the fact that more Republicans didn't vote against her show how much they are Trump's lapdogs... Also how much they like her money...

Betsy DeVos’s Disastrous Interview Proves She’s Still Clueless on Education
Perhaps the education secretary should stay offscreen.

As Donald Trump assembled his Cabinet last year, some prerequisites candidates were expected to satisfy included: staggering wealth, outright contempt for the mission for the agency they were being hired to run, and/or total ignorance of what, in fact, their respective departments were supposed to do. In Betsy DeVos, secretary of education, the president scored a trifecta: a billionaire who wants to destroy public schools, and who seemingly lacks even the most basic understanding of education policy. That was on display during DeVos’s painful confirmation hearing last year, in which she was unable to answer simple questions about education, and, incredibly, suggested that teachers be armed to protect students from grizzly bears. And one year later, DeVos still has no idea what she‘s talking about, if last night’s sit-down with 60 Minutes is any indication.

In an interview with Lesley Stahl, DeVos couldn’t actually say whether the number of rapes or sexual assaults on school campuses was the same as the number of false accusations, which was the basis for her decision to repeal Obama-era Title IX guidelines for how schools should handle sexual assault allegations. Despite confessions she couldn’t “ever imagine” her first grade teacher, Mrs. Zorhoff, having a gun, she maintained her position that arming teachers “should be an option,” claiming that “we have invested billions and billions and billions of dollars from the federal level, and we have seen zero results,” yet wilting under further questioning from Stahl on that front. But the real pièce de résistance was when she attempted to claim that public schools that have seen their funding cut are performing better as a result:

Like your No comment because it quietly says to me Oh for gawds sake...lol

Really this Betsy creature should be nowhere near apublic education since she has no idea why they public schools are failing... Lack of money you bimbo but then you want money diverted into your charter schools so you will make a profit? So why not find out why the public schools are not doing so well and why make children take exams to enable them to enrol in your schools instead of monitoring and funding the public schools and encouraging every student to pursue a career that suits their abilities and talents.... Or is that too much to ask?

Not sure I posted this at the time of her swearing-in...

Satire from The Borowitz Report
DeVos Comes in Contact with Book for Very First Time

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—On her inaugural day as the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos came into contact with a book for the first time in her life.

Cameras were present to capture the historic moment, as DeVos extended her left hand tentatively and eventually touched the foreign object.

After touching the book for approximately one minute, DeVos quickly withdrew her hand and appeared drained by the experience.

“It was not as bad as I thought it would be, to tell you the truth,” DeVos said. “After all these years, it turns out it was nothing to be scared of.”

DeVos said that she “might touch another book” in the future but gave no specific indication of when that might occur.

Across the nation, millions of Americans reacted to DeVos’s confirmation by requesting vouchers that would enable to them to select an Education Secretary of their own choosing.

Satire from The Borowitz Report
DeVos Confirmation Makes Immigrants America’s Only Source of Educated People

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—The Senate’s confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary means that immigrants will be the nation’s only reliable source of educated people going forward, education experts said on Tuesday.

Under DeVos, according to Davis Logsdon, the dean of the University of Minnesota’s School of Education, the U.S. will have to “drastically increase its inflow of immigrants” if it wants people capable of performing even the simplest tasks.

“Most of our industries require people who can read, write, and do arithmetic, even in a rudimentary way,” he said. “The Senate just shot that to hell.”

With DeVos running the Department of Education, Logsdon said, millions of American students “will graduate from high school each year without mastering any useful skills—in other words, much like DeVos herself.”

The spectre of an economy plagued by workers “operating at a DeVos level of sub-proficiency” means that the United States will need to do everything in its power to attract educated immigrants to its shores, he said.

Logsdon did not offer a complete list of countries with people whom the U.S. should try to lure, but he said that a partial list would include Iraq, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, and Libya.

Report: Leaked Emails Show Carson Chose $31,000 Dining Set

The expensive tastes of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson are under renewed scrutiny after leaked emails appeared to show he was personally involved in choosing a wildly expensive furniture set for his office’s dining room—a claim that he previously denied. An email from August seen by CNN, sent by department staffer to Carson’s assistant, had the subject line “Secretary’s dining room set needed,” and refers to “printouts of the furniture the Secretary and Mrs. Carson picked out.” HUD spokesperson Raffi Williams said last month that Carson and his wife had “no awareness” that the set was being purchased, with another spokesperson saying: “The secretary did not order a new table. The table was ordered by the career staffers in charge of the building.” The order was swiftly canceled after it became public knowledge, with Carson himself claiming he was “shocked” by the price of it. Presented with the new emails on Tuesday, Williams said only: “When presented with options by professional staff, Mrs. Carson participated in the selection of specific styles.”
