What’s a ‘Covfefe’? Trump Tweet Unites a Bewildered Nation
By MATT FLEGENHEIMER

WASHINGTON — And on the 132nd day, just after midnight, President Trump had at last delivered the nation to something approaching unity — in bewilderment, if nothing else.

The state of our union was … covfefe.

The trouble began, as it so often does, on Twitter, in the early minutes of Wednesday morning. Mr. Trump had something to say. Kind of.

“Despite the constant negative press covfefe,” the Twitter post began, at 12:06 a.m., from @realDonaldTrump, the irrepressible internal monologue of his presidency.

And that was that.

A minute passed. Then another. Then five.

Surely he would delete the message.

Ten. Twenty. It was nearly 12:30 a.m.

Forty minutes. An hour. The questions mounted.

Had the president’s lawyers, so eager to curb his stream-of-consciousness missives, tackled the commander in chief under the cover of night?

Perhaps, some worried aloud, Mr. Trump had experienced a medical episode a quarter of the way through his 140 characters.

Or maybe he had simply gazed upon his work, paused and thought: “Yes. Nailed it.”

No one at the White House could immediately be reached for comment overnight.

But by 1 a.m., the debate had effectively consumed Twitter — or at least a certain segment of insomniac Beltway types, often journalists and political operatives — ascending the list of trending topics. “Of course #covfefe is real word,” wrote @Diane_7A, recalling an invented tragedy once invoked by the Trump White House. “It was coined during the Bowling Green Massacre.”

“What if this is it,” asked Emily Nussbaum, The New Yorker television critic, after just five minutes. “That is his final tweet & the rest of history stops.”

Some appeared to temper their whimsy as more sobering news dominated the medium: a huge explosion in Kabul, Afghanistan, leaving dozens dead or wounded.

Yet the instinct to linger was powerful, for those who had glimpsed the initial post, even if they did not seem entirely sure why they were still awake.

“Covfefe,” said Tasneem Raja, a journalist, perhaps chafing at the growing communal giddiness. “There, I participated.”

Eventually, the jokes lurched into delirium. Twitter users held forth on the former F.B.I. director James Covfefe. They pledged to order a grande covfefe during their next Starbucks runs. They announced they had at last discovered what Bill Murray whispered to Scarlett Johansson at the end of “Lost in Translation.”

And as the hour wore on, stragglers turned their lonely eyes to the only account that could save them. “Help, @MerriamWebster,” pleaded Jessica Taylor, a reporter at NPR, one of several to make the request.

The dictionary obliged.

“Wakes up. Checks Twitter. Uh...” it began. “Regrets checking Twitter. Goes back to bed.”

Just after 6 a.m., the president resurfaced, finally deleting the Twitter post and tapping out another.

“Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’ ???” he wrote. “Enjoy!”

The White House spokesman addressed the late night Twitter post during an off-camera press briefing at the White House on Wednesday. Via Associated Press

Consensus proved elusive — to say nothing of pronunciation guidelines — and the White House appeared disinclined to help. “The president and a small group of people know exactly what he meant,” Sean Spicer, the press secretary, said flatly. He did not elaborate.

But someone else had a theory — the American perhaps most attuned to the power of the president’s Twittering hand. “I thought it was a hidden message,” Hillary Clinton told a crowd in California, “to the Russians.”

Reporters Laugh At Sean Spicer When He Insists Trump’s “Covfefe” Tweet Was Completely Normal
During Wednesday’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sean Spicer told the crowd that Trump’s bizarre “covfefe” tweet was not only intentional, but that it made perfect sense to a small group of people. This man is so far in denial that he couldn’t even muster the excuse of it being a simple typo.

Covfefe . . . for Her

By Riane Konc

http://www.newyorker.com/humor/daily-shouts/covfefe-for-her

Covfefe is for the determined. For the woman who still insists on pronouncing the $ in Ke$ha, even though it’s just Kesha now.

Covfefe is for the innovator. For the woman who doesn’t have time to go to the gym but still wants to feel like she has strong biceps, so she grabs a bird and throws it and says, “Wow, look how far I threw that bird” as it flies away.

Covfefe is for the flat-earthers. For the woman who doesn’t just believe what she’s told. We salute you, freethinker. We see you on the basketball court, trying to dribble a Frisbee. You’re a Covfefe woman.

Covfefe is for the feelers. For the woman who isn’t ashamed to cry at a viral video of a little girl with glasses seeing her mom for the first time as the fraud that she really is.

Covfefe is for the brash. For the woman you just accused of being gluten-intolerant without even knowing that some of her best friends are bagels.

Covfefe is for the strong. For the moms who access superhuman strength in order to pull cars off their children, yes . . . but also for the moms who are stacking cars on top of children in the first place. There’s a place for both of you at Covfefe.

Covfefe is for the intense. For the woman whom everyone either loves, or hates, or feels fine about, or kind of likes, or had a thing with once but is over it, or have never met.

Covfefe is for the quick on their feet. For the woman reading aloud who realizes that she’s about to say a common word she’s never actually had to pronounce but, instead of stammering her way through it, looks out at her audience and just screams and screams.

Covfefe is for the helper. For every aunt, mother, and grandmother who gave up her own dreams to be on call, 24/7, in case somebody posts a cute picture online and needs to be told that she should frame it.

Covfefe is for the dominant. For the only woman who knows how to get her man to stop talking about “Wonder Woman” and finish delivering his mother’s eulogy.

Covfefe is for the creative. For the mom who refuses to be boxed in and yells, “Say fireworks!” instead of “Say cheese!” when she takes pictures on the Fourth of July.

Covfefe is for the serendipitous. For when a brilliant, beautiful, athletic, successful woman drops all of her books on the sidewalk and a homely, awkward, nerdy man—his glasses askew—bends down to scoop them up, and on his way back to standing they make brief, shy eye contact, and in that moment they are strangers, opposites, neither of them knowing or suspecting that, just a few whirlwind weeks later, the woman will be dating someone much better looking who wears contacts.

Covfefe is for the branding expert. For the quirky N.S.A. agent who says that she likes to people-watch.

AND NOW INTRODUCING: Covfefe for Men! Because men felt left out and wouldn’t stop complaining.

Covfefe for Men. It’s prescription-strength P.M.S. medication for her . . . for him.

Trump and Clinton revive campaign feud with Twitter jabs
Dylan Stableford Senior Editor •Yahoo News

In a scene reminiscent of their bitter election contest, President Trump and Hillary Clinton exchanged words on Twitter late Wednesday, with the president reviving his derogatory nickname for the former Democratic nominee, who earlier in the day cited Russian interference and sexism as factors in her loss.

“Crooked Hillary Clinton now blames everybody but herself, refuses to say she was a terrible candidate,” Trump tweeted. “Hits Facebook & even Dems & DNC.”

Clinton fired back using a term Trump accidentally unleashed upon the global lexicon the day before.

People in covfefe houses shouldn’t throw covfefe,” she tweeted.

Although Trump did not respond to the former secretary of state’s shade, his son Donald Trump Jr., was more than happy to do so.

“What house is he in again???” Trump Jr. tweeted. “That’s what I thought. You’re trying too hard.”

In an appearance at the Code Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Clinton criticized former FBI Director James Comey and the media for focusing on her email scandal rather than potential Russian interference in the campaign.

“Comey was more than happy to talk about my emails, but he wouldn’t talk about investigation of the Russians,” Clinton said.

Clinton also suggested the Kremlin had help in its election meddling.

“The Russians, in my opinion, and based on the intel and counterintel people I’ve talked to, could not have known how best to weaponize,” she said, “unless they had been guided … by Americans and guided by people who had polling and data information.”

“I take responsibility for every decision I made,” Clinton added. “But that’s not why I lost.”
