With all due respect to the great Albert, we in France have been saying that about culture, for as long as I can remember. It's what's left when one has forgotten everything learned in school.

We also say "Culture is like fruit jam. The less you have, the more you spread it." shameless grin

Talking of what's left after you've forgotten, etc., did you ever read a book called "1066 and all that"? It's a riot, and warmly recommended. My copy of it is, like most of my books, in a box somewhere either in New York or my Fairfield basement, but I intend to put my hand back on it soon. It's priceless!!!

I don't see the point or the wisdom in that. Do they mean that the "hero" should not rub it in and say "I told you so"? confused

Personally, I wouldn't define "heroism" as keeping your mouth shut. So I don't see the point of that particular saying either.
