Berlin (CNN) A truck barreled into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin on Monday night, killing nine and injuring at least 50. Officials are investigating the crash as an act of terrorism, according to a German intelligence official familiar with the matter.

Authorities have apprehended the suspected driver, according to a police spokesman.

The crash occurred in Breitscheidplatz in the western part of central Berlin. Another person who was in the truck died on scene, Berlin police tweeted.

"A truck just ran over a sidewalk at #Breitscheidplatz Our colleague report multiple injuries. more to follow," Berlin police tweeted.

The crash sent shoppers running and screaming.

Witness Emma Rushton told CNN that the truck didn't slow down. She said the truck was traveling about 40 mph through a crowded pedestrian area.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack.

With all those people who came to Europe, we can say that we have potential terrorists for long years to come.

Terrorist May Be ‘On the Run’ as Berlin Cops Fear They Arrested the Wrong Man
The wrong man may have been arrested after a truck barreled into a festive holiday market, leaving 12 dead and dozens more injured.

BERLIN—As the festive scents of roasted almonds, Glühwein, and cotton candy lingered in the evening air over the Christmas market by the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the streets were empty—except for policemen with machine guns standing everywhere.

At least 12 people are dead and around 50 injured after a truck mowed into a heavily packed square Monday evening in a suspected terror attack. The truck sped through a pedestrian street between wooden Christmas stalls for more than 150 feet, crushing people beneath its wheels, eyewitnesses reported.

A 19-year-old high-school student named Felix was walking into the shopping mall opposite the square about 8 p.m. with his friends when he heard “a scream go around the entire Breitscheidplatz,” he told The Daily Beast.

Angela Merkel said Tuesday that authorities were assuming this was a terrorist attack. Police have confirmed there were two men in the truck’s cab: The one in the passenger seat, described as a Polish national, was found dead, while the driver fled the scene. A 23-year-old man was later arrested less than a mile from the scene, around the Siegessäule, or Victory Column.

The man—named locally as Naved B—was arrested, after a member of the public chased him down Budapester Strasse, leading from the Breitscheidplatz to the city’s central park, Tiergarten. When the cops caught up, Naved did not try to resist arrest and police did not find any weapons on him.

Naved B denies having anything to do with the crime, although he is saying very little, according to security sources. He was already known to police as a suspected sex offender, and authorities believe he was registered under two different names, with similar dates of birth (though he is definitely born in 1993), and even two nationalities (Pakistani and Afghan).

On Tuesday, however, it seems real doubt was setting in over whether Naved B was connected to the attack. German newspaper Die Welt reported a high-ranking police officer saying, “We have the wrong man, and thus a new situation, as the real culprit is still armed, at large, and can do new damage.”

Berlin Police Chief Klaus Kandt confirmed that investigators are unsure if the suspect is the truck driver. Blood-splattered clothes had been found in the vehicle, but there were no traces of blood on Naved B.

The truck’s owner, who runs a carrier near Szczecin, Poland, has reportedly claimed that the vehicle was supposed to be delivering steel in Berlin on Tuesday morning but that the driver, his cousin, hasn’t been answering his phone since midday Monday.

Trump portrays Berlin attack as onslaught against Christians
Olivier Knox

President-elect Donald Trump characterized the gruesome truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin as part of a systematic campaign by Muslim extremists against Christians, fueling speculation that he views the war on terrorism as a clash of civilizations and not a conflict against extremists.

Trump’s late-Monday statement noted that the 12 people killed and 50 wounded were “innocent civilians.” But rather than identifying them as German citizens and tourists, he cast the attack in unusually religious terms.

“ISIS and other Islamist terrorists continually slaughter Christians in their communities and places of worship as part of their global jihad,” Trump said. “These terrorists and their regional and worldwide networks must be eradicated from the face of the earth, a mission we will carry out with all freedom-loving partners.”

Neither the White House nor the State Department described the attack in religious terms. But German officials, including Chancellor Angela Merkel and top prosecutor Peter Frank, have highlighted the symbolism of striking a Christmas market outside a church less than a week before the holiday.

Frank suggested that the terrorists followed instructions from the so-called Islamic State and underlined that the attack occurred at “the prominent and symbolic target of a Christmas market.” Merkel said the victims “were looking forward to Christmas.”

The president-elect’s rhetorical choices bear special scrutiny because the rest of the world is still trying to figure out what kind of leader he will become Jan. 20. Trump communications aides did not return an email seeking their perspective.

And this is no mere debate about language. “The Trump statement on the Berlin attack rightly focuses on the victims who were celebrating the Christmas holiday, but he leaves out a critical point: the vast majority of ISIS’s victims are Muslims,” a former senior counter-terrorism official told Yahoo News. “In our counterterrorism fight, we need to enlist the support of Muslims around the world, and not alienate them by singling out Christians, as if they are the only victims of ISIS.”

Throughout the 2016 presidential campaign, the real estate entrepreneur repeatedly promised to blame “radical Islamic terrorists” for such attacks, a clear break from the more cautious language his two immediate predecessors used.

He's not wrong, there. The Islamists remote-controlled by ISIS target symbols of those they call Infidels. This attack occurred near a Christmas market and at the foot of a Catholic church. What else do we need?

Cops Seek Tunisian Man in Berlin Attack

German police say they’re seeking a Tunisian man who may have been involved in the Berlin truck attack at a Christmas market on Monday night. Officials initially wrongly arrested a Pakistani man in the attack, which injured dozens and left 12 people dead. An ID said to be found under the driver’s seat of the truck reportedly belongs to an Anis A, but the suspect is expected to use multiple names. Authorities are sifting through 500 leads that might identify the killer and lead to his arrest, and investigators are collecting and analyzing DNA and fingerprints from the scene. “We have many ways to find this person,” said André Schulz, the head of the German Union of Detective Constables.

Shot Dead In Milan: How Anis Amri, the Berlin Truck Terrorist, Was Killed
On a routine pre-dawn stop, a couple of young Italian cops asked Anis Amri for his papers. He pulled a gun instead—a fatal mistake.
Barbie Latza Nadeau
12.23.16 6:33 AM ET

ROME—What started as a routine police check ended in the death of Europe’s most wanted man. Two police officers on a regular early morning patrol spotted a man acting suspiciously at 3:00 a.m. local time at a train station in Milan’s working class neighborhood of Sesto San Giovanni. They approached the man, unaware that he was Anis Amri, the Berlin truck terrorist, and asked for his documents. He reached into his backpack and instead of pulling out papers, he drew a .22-caliber pistol. Reportedly shouting “Cop bastards!” he shot one of the officers, who returned fire and killed him. The injured officer is expected to survive. He had been on the force just nine months.

Police later said that Amri had a “few hundred euro” in cash, but no cellphone. The station where he was found is just a few miles from where the truck Amri used as a weapon originated, though the head of Italy’s intelligence agency told reporters that they thought that might be a coincidence. There is no indication that Amri was in the area when the truck filled with steel pipes left Italy.

Police then surrounded the area and immediately matched the cadaver's fingerprints for a positive identification. He had a train ticket from France to Turin to Milan’s central station and another to the Sesto San Giovanni station in his backpack, implying that he had travelled to Italy under somewhat conventional circumstances, rather than using a network of accomplices to hide him. He was alone at the station and, so far, police do not believe anyone was meeting him.

ISIS mouthpiece Amaq published a three-minute clip today, in which a snugly dressed and headphone wearing Amri declares his loyalty to Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi, the leader of the so-called Islamic State. Standing by the harbor in Berlin Moabit, Amri vows to take revenge for the blood of Muslims that has been spilled at the hands of “crusaders”. The heaps of red and yellow leaves in the background suggest the video was made weeks ago, in autumn.

But the fact that Amri would return to Italy, the only country where he has ever lived for any length of time in Europe, should surprise no one. But the police judgment that he was not necessarily there to plan a new terror attack might surprise many. Despite the fact that he was alone, Italian authorities believe he was on his way to a safer hiding place. Just where that might have been, or whether he had met anyone in France, Turin, or Milan are priority questions right now.

The French connection is, of course, especially problematic given the well-known focus of the so-called Islamic State on attacking French targets. In November, police disrupted what appeared to be a serious plot to attack various targets including Disneyland Paris and, indeed, the Christmas market on the Champs Élysées, which is very similar to the Berlin market where Amri killed 12 people on Monday, 11 of them mowed down with a hijacked tractor-trailer truck whose usual driver had been stabbed and shot to death.

[...]

Italy’s new prime minister, Paolo Gentiloni, said that while the open border policy in which people can travel freely between Schengen countries makes it easier for terrorists to move, it is vital to keep Europe open. But as new details emerge about just how easily would-be terrorists who are under surveillance in every country they traverse, one might beg the question whether that is still the best approach.
