In French we have a phrase, "se refaire une virginité" (to rebuild one's virginity.) It can be taken both in the literal sense (surgically reconstituting the hymen) or in the figurative sense.
Though, with Bristol Palin, with a kid to show for it... yeah, I guess this could be considered the second Immaculate Conception.
Mind you, one of Bobby Kennedy's sons - don't remember which one, he had so many - had his marriage annulled after having given his former wife a number of children. And Caroline of Monaco had her marriage to Philippe Junot annulled though it was obvious the marriage had been consummated. Such hypocrisy all round!
About Bristol Palin, did you notice, when Sarah still had a chance to get the Veep post, they scrubbed up Bristol's "fiancé", put him in a clean suit, paraded him around, swore high and low they'd get married as soon as could be. But once the election was lost, no more talk of marriage, they exiled the guy to the far ends of Alaska (not that it's a great loss), Bristol remains unmarried, the kid is still illegitimate, but everything's supposed to be OK because, really, they didn't really commit the original sin sex act. If anyone can believe that.
At least Albert of Monaco acknowledged the paternity for his half-Black child, though, the kid being illegitimate, there's no risk Monaco will have a half-Black Prince any time soon. But this is another saga. The Monaco "royal" family would rate a whole series of threads all by itself. _________________

Palin's campaign against the "R-word" hits snag with Limbaugh
1 hr 11 mins ago
Sarah Palin's campaign against the derogatory usage of the word "retard" collided with her campaign to maintain her popularity with conservatives today, with confusing results.
|
In case you missed it before, here's the original story:
From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby
Sarah Palin is set to campaign with Texas Gov. Rick Perry this weekend.
(CNN) - Sarah Palin is criticizing a Rick Perry campaign adviser accused of using the word "retarded" - but she isn't demanding that the aide be fired.
The accusation - made against top Perry consultant David Carney on Wednesday by Kay Bailey Hutchison's gubernatorial campaign - is of note because Palin is heading to Texas this weekend to campaign for Perry as he seeks a third term as Texas governor.
On Monday, Palin called on President Obama to fire his Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for using the very same word in a closed door meeting about health care negotiations.
Palin, whose youngest son Trig has Down Syndrome, wrote on her Facebook page Monday that the word "retarded" is "a slur on all God's children with cognitive and developmental disabilities."
She said Emanuel's use of the term, first reported in a Wall Street Journal article last week, was "heartbreaking" and merited his dismissal from the president's inner circle.
Hutchison's campaign manager Terry Sullivan told CNN Wednesday that Carney repeatedly said "retarded" during a recent conference call between the gubernatorial campaigns to plan logistics for their Jan. 14 debate in Denton. _________________

Palin Calls For Rahm Emanuel To Be Fired
Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is calling on President Barack Obama to fire White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel over Emanuel's penchant for using profanity and a statement he made that was derogatory of the handicapped. Really.
The 2008 vice presidential candidate put up a Facebook post on Monday evening arguing that Emanuel's offending slur (in which he said that liberal groups thinking of running health care-related ads against Democratic lawmakers were "F---ing retarded") was no less the equivalent of using the "N-word."
I would ask the president to show decency in this process by eliminating one member of that inner circle, Mr. Rahm Emanuel, and not allow Rahm's continued indecent tactics to cloud efforts. Yes, Rahm is known for his caustic, crude references about those with whom he disagrees, but his recent tirade against participants in a strategy session was such a strong slap in many American faces that our president is doing himself a disservice by seeming to condone Rahm's recent sick and offensive tactic.
The Obama Administration's Chief of Staff scolded participants, calling them, "F---ing retarded," according to several participants, as reported in the Wall Street Journal.
Just as we'd be appalled if any public figure of Rahm's stature ever used the "N-word" or other such inappropriate language, Rahm's slur on all God's children with cognitive and developmental disabilities - and the people who love them - is unacceptable, and it's heartbreaking.
The Emanuel remark was reported recently by The Wall Street Journal but dates back to the heat of the health care wars in August. And it certainly wasn't the first time the chief of staff (known for an acid tongue) has leveled an odious broadside at one group or another from his perch in the West Wing.
Palin presumably seized on this one because of her own experience with the issue -- her youngest child, of course, suffers from Down syndrome. But it's hard to ignore the fact that making hay out of "controversies" like these is her political trademark, regardless of whether there is a personal tie to the matter. Palin tells 'tea party': It's revolution time
By LIZ SIDOTI, AP National Political Writer
42 mins ago
Could they have found a more unattractive picture of Palin? Here she looks like the witch and the b*tch she is.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sarah Palin declared "America is ready for another revolution" and repeatedly assailed President Barack Obama on Saturday before adoring "tea party" activists. They make up a seemingly natural constituency should she run for president.
"This movement is about the people," the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee said as the crowd roared. "Government is supposed to be working for the people."
Palin note Democrats' electoral losses since Obama took office a year ago with talk of hope and promises of change and asked: "How's that hope-y, change-y stuff workin' out for you?"
Her audience waved flags and erupted in cheers during multiple standing ovations as Palin gave the keynote address at the first national convention of the "tea party" coalition. It's an anti-establishment, grass-roots network motivated by anger over the growth of government, budget-busting spending and Obama's policies.
Filled with Palin's trademark folksy jokes, the speech amounted to a 45-minute pep talk for the coalition and promotion of its principles. The speech also was rife with criticism for Obama and Democrats who control Congress, but delivered with a light touch. But, aside from broad conservative principles like lower taxes and a strong national defense, the speech was short on Palin's own policy ideas that typically indicate someone is seriously laying the groundwork to run for the White House.
Indeed, Republican observers say she's seemingly done more lately to establish herself as a political celebrity focused on publicity rather than a political candidate focused on policy.
Catering to her crowd, Palin talked of limited government, strict adherence to the Constitution, and the "God-given right" of freedom. She said the "fresh, young and fragile" movement is the future of American politics because it's "a ground-up call to action" to both major political parties to change how they do business. "You've got both party machines running scared," she said.
Palin suggested that the party should remain leaderless and cautioned against allowing the movement to be defined by any one person. "This is about the people" and "it's a lot bigger than any charismatic guy with a teleprompter," she said, jabbing at Obama.
"Let us not get bogged down in the small squabbles. Let us get caught up in the big ideas," she said, though she offered few of her own.
The former Alaska governor, who resigned from office last summer before completing her first term, didn't indicate whether her political future would extend beyond cable news punditry and paid speeches to an actual presidential candidacy.
All she offered was a smile when a moderator asking her questions used the phrase "President Palin." That prompted most in the audience to stand up and chant "Run, Sarah, run!"
But, given the plethora of attacks that Palin leveled at Obama, she seemed like she was already running against him. And, perhaps, as an independent.
She talked little about the Republican Party, going so far as to suggest that she should apologize to the party for her inability to get her husband to register with the GOP. She also encouraged "tea party"-aligned candidates to compete in GOP primaries, saying: "Contested primaries aren't civil war; they're democracy at work and that's beautiful."
Palin criticized Obama for continuing to blame George W. Bush for the country's woes instead of blaming what she called the Democrat's own big-government, big-spending agenda that has made the country less secure. She called his policies out of date and said they were "running out of time," suggesting big GOP wins in the fall mid-term elections.
She also ribbed him for Democratic losses in New Jersey and Virginia governor's races last fall and in a Massachusetts Senate race last month, saying: "When you're 0-3 you'd better stop lecturing and start listening."
On foreign policy and national security, Palin said he had "misguided thinking" and a pre-Sept. 11 mindset, saying: "We need a commander in chief" not a professor of law.
"Foreign policy can't be managed through the politics of personality," she said.
She assailed the $787 billion stimulus plan — "Did you feel very stimulated?" she asked — and said the administration's deficit spending was "immoral" and "generational theft."
Her fee was $100,000 for the appearance at the for-profit event. But she said she would not keep the money, instead giving it back to "the cause." She didn't elaborate.
Admission was $549 for access to the entire three-day gathering or $349 just to hear Palin's speech after a dinner of lobster and steak at the sprawling Gaylord Opryland resort. The cost led to criticism from even some activists that it runs counter to the coalition's image and could preclude people from attending.
It's just one of several "tea party" appearances Palin plans in the coming weeks. She will speak at a rally in Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid's hometown of Searchlight, Nev., to kick off the Tea Party Express III tour. In April, she heads to Boston for "tea party" gathering there around the one-year anniversary of the coalition that began last spring. _________________ Môt tô pho* môt ly bia là su*o*'ng thân! |

VINTAGE PALIN MOMENT: Sarah Palin Reads Answers off of Her Hand
Palin gave her $115,000.00 speech tonight to an audience of less than enthusiastic Tea Partiers. She appeared off of her game, delivering a rather flat speech, one that at least failed to inspire shouts of “kill him!” as her campaign rallies did. So there's that.
She managed to get part way through the speech before misspeaking and saying “Alaska” instead of “America”, but what do you expect from an AIP secessionist? What are you? Some kind of elitist? Surely Putin would know what she meant, were she in the office she was mantled for.
““Nations around the world “wonder if Alaska is still that beacon of hope.” Pauses, realizes she meant America, plunges on.” Roger Ebert live tweeting the speech.
She spent a while attempting to mock the Real President for using a teleprompter, which earned her derision and scorn even from her fans on twitter. Why, you ask, would a Palin fan not enjoy a good dash of mock and awe? Perhaps because Herself was reading off of notes for the entire speech….which only served to give us a gander at the odd poof of hair attached to her real hair. Not sure what's going on there-- maybe that's "Real America" hair?
But that wasn’t the low point. The Vintage Palin moment occurred when she sat down to answer questions, which apparently had been pre-screened. So, she had a chance to study up prior to this moment.
And yet, she actually consulted notes scrawled on her hand while fishing around for the answer. As in, a handprompter. Leave it to Sarah.
God forbid she have yet another all of em and any of em moment. I mean, when she dragged that out during the Beck interview, even Beck was disgusted.
Oh, Sarah. Thank you for the entertainment. I guess the next time meanie liberal elites like Katie Couric ask Palin what she reads, she can say, "My hand."
Hypocrite Sarah Palin ranting about Obama using a teleprompter? Free. Always free. You can see this on Fox.
Sarah Palin charging to talk about a populist movement of the Joe Six Packs? $115,000.00
Sarah Palin cheating during a pre-screened Q and A session? Priceless.

UPDATE: Feb 7, 2010 11:36
On Palin's PalmPrompter, "The words "Energy", "Tax" and "Lift American Spirits" are clearly visible."
One should note that she wrote "Budget" and slashed it out, replacing it with "Tax" for "Tax cuts". Which sort of implies that perhaps she doesn't understand the difference or relationship between tax cuts and budget cuts. But then, that's a common problem among "fiscal conservatives" these days. Unpaid for tax cuts which lead to a huge deficit that one can then blame on one's predecessor. Or, in Palin's case, one can just quit and dump those pesky problems in the lap of your previously never even cc'd on state email business Lt Gov. Quit and then get rich leading a movement of "small government" rebels. Oh, the bitter, Orwellian irony of it all. _________________

Palin's Palm Holds the Answers
by Mike Krumboltz

What was written on Sarah Palin's hand?
Remember those quizzes you had on the state capitals back in junior high? Oh, the pressure! The temptation to write "Pierre, Olympia, Dover, Albany" on the inside of your hand was overwhelming, wasn't it? But you resisted. Maybe Sarah Palin should have done the same.
The former vice presidential candidate seems to have been caught using curious crib notes during an interview this past weekend at the high-profile Tea Party Convention in Nashville. While speaking about her top political priorities, Ms. Palin gazed at her hand in a rather suspicious manner.
Later, Web researchers zoomed in on her left palm and found the following words scrawled in black ink: "Energy, Budget cuts (with "budget" crossed out), Tax, Lift American Spirits." In an ironic twist during the speech, Ms. Palin worked in a jab against President Obama's often-mocked use of TelePrompTers. You can watch the clip below or check out a close-up here.
Following the flap, the Web went wild. Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC mocked Ms. Palin by relying on her own crib notes to recap highlights from Palin's appearance. Her keynote speech, it should be noted, had the crowd on its feet. "Run, Sarah, run," the crowd chanted (as in "please run for president in 2012").
But palm-gate wasn't the only bit of news sparked by Palin. Her defense of Rush Limbaugh's use of the word "retards" raised eyebrows, as well. On Fox News Sunday, the anti "r-word" crusader contended that Limbaugh had used the word in the context of political humor and satire. Earlier in the week, the difference between her angry reaction to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's use of the "slur" and a more restrained response to Limbaugh's made from some awkward fallout. Web searches on "sarah palin on fox news" and "palin limbaugh" have both surged as the controversy swirled.
Sarah's husband, Todd Palin, has also been back in the news. The self-proclaimed former "first dude" of Alaska was revealed to be quite active in state business. According to recently uncovered emails, Todd Palin was "involved in a judicial appointment, monitored contract negotiations with public employee unions, received background checks on a corporate CEO, added his approval or disapproval to state board appointments and passed financial information marked 'confidential' from his oil company employer to a state attorney." _________________

The way Sarah Palin is exploiting her child's Down Syndrome, reminding everyone of it at any opportunity, carrying him around when on tour, and thinking she's the target if anyone even mentions Down's Syndrome (as if she were the only mother in the world with that problem, and the other ones don't parade their child around the way she does) - well, in my opinion it's just shameful. Or shameless. The woman has no shame.
Palin, daughter lash out at 'Family Guy' episode
By BECKY BOHRER, Associated Press Writer
Tue Feb 16, 9:05 pm ET
JUNEAU, Alaska – Sarah Palin is lashing out at the portrayal of a character with Down syndrome on the Fox animated comedy "Family Guy." In a Facebook posting headlined "Fox Hollywood — What a Disappointment," the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee and current Fox News contributor said Sunday night's episode felt like "another kick in the gut." Palin's youngest son, Trig, has Down syndrome.
The episode features the character Chris falling for a girl with Down syndrome. On a date, he asks what her parents do.
She replies: "My dad's an accountant, and my mom is the former governor of Alaska."
Palin resigned as Alaska governor last summer.
Palin's oldest daughter, Bristol, also was quoted on her mother's Facebook page, calling the show's writers "heartless jerks."
"When you're the son or daughter of a public figure, you have to develop thick skin. My siblings and I all have that, but insults directed at our youngest brother hurt too much for us to remain silent," she is quoted as saying.
"If the writers of a particularly pathetic cartoon show thought they were being clever in mocking my brother and my family yesterday, they failed," Bristol Palin added in the Monday posting. "All they proved is that they're heartless jerks."
Palin wrote that she'd asked her daughter what she thought of the show and Bristol's reply was "a much more restrained and gracious statement than I want to make about an issue that begs the question: When is enough enough?"
This isn't the first time Palin has spoken out over an attack, real or perceived, on her family. Last year, she condemned a joke David Letterman made about her daughter, for which he later apologized.
A "Family Guy" publicist didn't immediately return an e-mail seeking comment. _________________

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin -- who has gone to great lengths to hype the supposed dangers of a big government takeover of American health care -- admitted over the weekend that she used to get her treatment in Canada's single-payer system.
"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada," Palin said in her first Canadian appearance since stepping down as governor of Alaska. "And I think now, isn't that ironic?"
The irony, one guesses, is that Palin now views Canada's health care system as revolting: with its government-run administration and 'death-panel'-like rationing. Clearly, however, she and her family once found it more alluring than, at the very least, the coverage available in rural Alaska. Up to the age of six, Palin lived in a remote town near the closest Canadian city, Whitehorse.
Officials at several hospitals in that area declined to give out information on patient visits. _________________

It's actually more than a flip-flop.
The story she told is that her brother injured his foot and they hustled him to Canada.
A couple of years ago, she told the same story, except the family took her brother to Juneau, not Canada, to take care of his injured foot. As Lawrence O'Donnel remarked yesterday, since his brother has two feet to injure and treat, both stories may be true. Yeah, right. _________________

Sarah Palin's reality TV show may air on A&E or Discovery
By Elizabeth Snead
March 18, 2010 12:41 PM ET
A&E and Discovery are reportedly now the front-runners in the fight to land Sarah Palin's Alaska-themed TV series.
No decision has been made yet. But Variety estimates the reality TV show will go for $1 million an episode. This is so gonna burn Levi Johnston.
At A&E, Palin would fit in with the network's travel strategy and they already have a show set in Hawaii, which stars Dog the Bounty Hunter. But A&E's sister History Channel, has "Ice Road Truckers," also set in Alaska. Then again, Discovery makes sense since "Deadliest Catch" is also shot in Alaska.
According to insiders, a decision could be made in the next day or two. Clearly, Sarah's (un)popularity is why the cable networks are interested.
Palin has a loyal fan base. And there's also legions of "gotchas" who will watch to see if she slips up and writes stuff on her hand again.
The good news about all this? And there is some.
If Sarah doesn't run for president in 2012, it's rumored that producer Mark Burnett wants to turn Palin into a daytime talk show star. _________________

Elizabeth Hasselbeck: Sarah Palin's Crosshairs Ad 'Despicable'
First Posted: 03-26-10 10:11 AM | Updated: 03-26-10 12:28 PM
Sarah Palin's gun sight-riddled campaign map is so militant that it's even lost her the support of "The View" co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck, who called Palin's behavior "despicable."
After "View" co-host Joy Behar said the map, which features white and red gun sights drawn over districts whose Democratic representatives voted for health care, "looks like an al Qaeda Christmas card" Thursday, Hasselbeck -- who campaigned with Palin in 2008 -- spoke up in uncharacteristic agreement.
"This hasn't been a great week in terms of, I think, the Constitution and where it says that you're supposed to, you know, everybody is, has a mandate to have insurance. But I think the way some Republicans are handling this is nothing more than purely despicable," Hasselbeck said. "The names that are next to and being highlighted by those crosshairs -- I think it's an abuse of the Second Amendment. I also feel as though every single person on here is a mother, a father, a friend, a brother, a sister, and to take it to this level is -- it's disappointing to see this come from the Party, and I would hope that leaders like Sarah Palin would end this."
After some crosstalk from the other "View" co-hosts, Behar thanked Hasselbeck for repudiating the GOP's implicit support for the increasingly violent behavior directed towards Democrats. "John Boehner should take a page from your book," she said, pronouncing the House Minority Leader's name "Boner." "Republicans are not speaking out against this and you may be the first one to do it, and I salute you, my girl."

We won't feel sorry for dear Sarah. She's made $12 million in speaking fees and other public appearances since she resigned from Alaska's governorship. She now makes in 10 months ten times more than she made in a whole year as governor. She makes even more than the Prez of the US these days.
Sarah Palin Speaking Contract: 'Rider' Demands First-Class Travel, Pre-Screened Questions, Bendable Straws
AP/The Huffington Post
Updated: 04-13-10 06:46 PM
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Sarah Palin will get first-class airfare for two and three rooms at a luxury hotel when she gives a speech in June for a university foundation.
And organizers better not forget to stock her lectern with two water bottles and bendable straws.
The details of Palin's contract [PDF] with the California State University, Stanislaus Foundation were contained in five pages of the document retrieved from a campus trash bin by students who heard administrators might be shredding documents related to the speech.
http://a.abcnews.go.com/images/Blotter/Palin%20contract2.pdf
State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, provided copies of the paperwork Tuesday.
Among other perks, Palin will fly first class - if she flies commercial. If not, "the private aircraft MUST BE a Lear 60 or larger ...," the contract specifies. She also must be provided with a suite and two single rooms in a deluxe hotel.
Moreover, for Q&A sessions, the document specifies that "the questions are to be collected from the audience in advance, pre-screened and a designated representative...shall ask questions directly of the speaker [Palin] to avoid delay time with a roving microphone in the audience."
The document, dated March 16, does not include compensation details for Palin, who commands speaking fees as high as $100,000.
The students said they acted on a tip that documents were being shredded last Friday, when campus staff members were supposed to be on furlough.
The foundation previously denied a request to release details of the contract made by The Associated Press under the California Public Records Act.
Last week, the university responded to a public records request by Yee by saying it did not have any documents related to Palin's appearance and had referred the matter to foundation board president Matt Swanson.
The next day, Swanson sent letters to both Yee and The Associated Press stating that Palin's contract has a nondisclosure clause. University foundations and other auxiliary organizations were not subject to the same public records requirements as the university itself, he said.
Yee disputed the claim.
Two of the students who discovered the discarded documents traveled to Sacramento to present them to the state attorney general's office. The office is reviewing Yee's request for an investigation into allegations that the university violated the California Public Records Act.
On Tuesday McClatchy also reported that Palin was seeking to ban cameras and tape recorders from her appearance at CSU Stanislaus:
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2010/04/13/92090/palin-may-ban-video-sound-recorders.html
But for reasons that remain ambiguous, there's no evidence that either
video or sound recordings will be permitted at her June 25 speech in
Turlock. Palin has imposed similar electronic blackouts at some of her
other recent speeches, including several delivered in Florida last month
and one delivered in Arkansas in February. _________________ Ta đây chớ ai

Discarded Palin contract sparks investigation
By ROBIN HINDERY, Associated Press Writer
Wed Apr 14, 4:04 am ET
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A document fished out of a California state university trash bin last week has prompted a state investigation into the university's foundation arm and its refusal to disclose details related to Sarah Palin's upcoming speech at the school.
On Tuesday, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said his office would look into the finances of the California State University, Stanislaus Foundation, as well as allegations that the nonprofit organization violated public disclosure laws by keeping details of Palin's contract secret.
Palin is scheduled to speak at a June 25 gala hosted by the foundation to mark the university's 50th anniversary.
Brown's investigation was prompted, in part, by a group of CSU Stanislaus students who retrieved five pages of the contract from a campus trash bin last Friday after hearing administrators were engaged in shredding documents.
The contract detailed the former Alaska governor's requirements for her visit, including first-class flights from Anchorage to California — if she flies commercial. If not, "the private aircraft MUST BE a Lear 60 or larger ...," the contract specifies.
Palin also must be provided with a suite and two single rooms in a deluxe hotel near the campus in Turlock in the Central Valley. During her speech, her lectern must be stocked with two water bottles and bendable straws.
The document, dated March 16, does not include compensation details for Palin, who commands speaking fees as high as $100,000. Her appearance at the university gala is expected to draw a large crowd, with tickets selling for $500 each.
"This is not about Sarah Palin," Brown said in a prepared statement Tuesday. "The issues are public disclosure and financial accountability in organizations embedded in state-run universities."
The foundation has previously denied requests by The Associated Press and state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, to disclose Palin's compensation package under the California Public Records Act.
Foundation board president Matt Swanson did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Brown's investigation. He previously told the AP that the contract's strict nondisclosure clause prevented him from sharing it, and that university foundations and other auxiliary organizations were not subject to the same public records requirements as the university itself.
Swanson has said Palin's fee and accommodations will be covered entirely by private donations, not state funds.
Jason Recher, a spokesman for Palin, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
The students who found the contract document said they acted on a tip that documents were being shredded at the campus administration building on a day when staff members were supposed to be on furlough.
Alicia Lewis, 26, was one of the students who went to investigate. The building was locked and gated, but the students were able to retrieve piles of paperwork, including the contract document, from a nearby trash bin, Lewis said.
Russell Giambelluca, the university's vice president of business and finance, said Tuesday that no one at the university was advised to destroy specific foundation documents, and staff members routinely shred and dispose of paperwork that is no longer needed.
Regarding the excerpt of Palin's contract, he said: "I find it interesting that among shredded documents you find one that's completely intact related to the contract."
Lewis and another student, Ashli Briggs, traveled to Sacramento Tuesday to give Brown office material they said had been thrown out, including two boxes of documents and two trash bags filled with shredded files.
"This is our little Watergate in the state of California," Yee said Tuesday. _________________

Palin rallies tea partiers with anti-tax message
By GLEN JOHNSON, AP Political Writer
2 hrs 35 mins ago
BOSTON – Sarah Palin rallied the tea party movement near its historical roots with a pre-Tax Day message, telling Washington politicians that government should be working for the people, not the other way around.
Addressing roughly 5,000 people assembled in the morning sunshine near the site of the original Boston Tea Party, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee accused President Barack Obama of overreaching with his $787 billion stimulus program and criticized the administration's health care, student loan and financial regulatory overhauls.
"Is this what their `change' is all about?" Palin asked the crowd on Boston Common. "I want to tell 'em, nah, we'll keep clinging to our Constitution and our guns and religion — and you can keep the change."
With husband Todd looking on, she added: "We need to cut taxes, so that our families can keep more of what they earn and produce and our mom-and-pops then, our small businesses, can reinvest according to our own priorities, and hire more people and let the private sector grow and thrive and prosper."
Palin, who served as Alaska's governor for 2 1/2 years, played to the crowd as she trotted out a trademark line while lobbying for more domestic energy production.
"Yeah, let's drill baby drill, not stall baby stall_ you betcha," she said.
The gathering harkened back to 1773, when American colonists upset about British taxation without government representation threw British tea into the harbor in protest.
"I feel like I'm taking care of my son and daughter and grandchildren's business," said Mary Lou O'Connell, 72, of Duxbury. She listed "deceit" and "gentle corrosion of the political process" as two concerns and toted a sign reading, "Start Deleting Corruption Nov. 2010."
Another attendee, John Arathuzik, 69, of Topsfield, said he had never been especially politically active until he saw the direction of the Obama administration.
"I feel like I can do one of two things: I can certainly vote in November, which I'll do, and I can provide support for the peaceful protest about the direction this country is taking," said Arathuzik, a veteran who clutched a copy of the Constitution distributed by one of the vendors who had set up shop amid locals heading to work and walking their dogs.
A festive mood filled the air. A band played patriotic music, and hawkers sold yellow Gadsden flags emblazoned with the words "Don't Tread on Me" and the image of a rattlesnake.
Notably absent was Sen. Scott Brown, the Republican who in January won the seat held for half a century by liberal icon Edward M. Kennedy.
He cited congressional business, which included hearings about the Iranian nuclear program.
"That's a heck of a lot more important than him being here right now," conservative talk show host Mark Williams told the crowd.
Brown kept the movement at a respectful distance during his campaign last winter, concerned if he gets too close, he risks being aligned with the tea party's more radical followers. Some have questioned the legitimacy of everything from President Barack Obama's U.S. birthplace to his college degree.
The rally was the next-to-last event in the 20-day, 47-city Tea Party Express tour concluding Thursday in Washington.
Palin also helped kick off the tour in Searchlight, Nev., hometown of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democratic target of the movement. _________________ Môt tô pho* môt ly bia là su*o*'ng thân! |
