Lately we've been plagued with spam members and posts, and it's getting out of hand.

First it was just people advertising pharmaceutical products (Viagra, Valium, etc.). It was annoying but harmless. We told those people if they wanted to advertise here, they could pay for it, but they never responded to that. So we deleted them.

Then it got to links to hard porn, which the other two Admins and I deleted just as fast as we saw them and blocked their IPs. We may joke on ladies's low cut dresses, wet tee-shirts and bikinis, or men's "equipment" now and then, but we definitely don't go for hard porn.

Then it got more dangerous. Instead of posting as "guests", these people registered and posted the same harmful messages several times in different forums. Dangerous or harmful because it was either politics (with links to the "T" word) or because the URLs led the unwary reader to a site that would install trojans or spyware on our computers. I spent three whole hours this afternoon cleaning up the site. Not to mention running my antispyware and antivirus after that to clean up my own hard drive.

So be warned: NEVER click on a link posted by a member who's not a regular well-known to you. I've reduced the number of "open" forums where people can post without registering anyway. And be very careful of usernames that are nonsensical (benkertsi, loosssi, dentali, yakowatnot, things like that) and obviously not Vietnamese, linked to something VN, or recognizable as someone we know or used to know from another site, or a genuine new member (thank goodness there are a few of those.) You'll know them from the things they post. I mean, when Saigonnais or Couch Potato or Cowboy post a link to YouTube, or Mat Hi Cuoi posts a music file, or QuocVinh or Mimosa a link to pretty pictures poetry, jokes or music, those are safe. Unknown URLs from unknown authors are not. We've left a couple of such messages in The War Room, so you can see what they look like. There's still one also in L'Avenue, imbedded in one of the regular posts (see post by "Anejotap43" in Cam Tu Son Hà). Hopefully we got all of the rest that were scattered among the different forums.

In the past few weeks I must have deleted twice as many "new" members who were spam than we have actual members. I've left two on probation for now, one has a site advertising furniture, which seems harmless enough, and the other hasn't posted anything yet, nor does s/he have a suspicious e-mail address. But they are here on sufferance and can be zapped any time they step out of line.

To summarize: Be on your guard, friends. The other admins and I do our best but we can't monitor the site 24/7, so please be sure to protect yourselves, so we can continue our discussions without importing viruses, trojans or worse.

Forewarned is forearmed.

If one of those spam members asks you to e-mail them, DON'T! That will only give them your e-mail address, which will then be flooded with spams or worse, and distributed to other spammers.

Only e-mail people you know "personally" (i.e. longstanding members of this or other known chat sites with whom you've corresponded before). For the others, use our Private Message feature.

Or as the French saying goes, "Drastic responses to drastic problems".

The spam members and postings (porn and spy sites) have become so bad (about a dozen "new members" and 20+ posts that I had to zap since yesterday) that I have subjected any new registration to Admin approval. Also, now you have to be registered to post in any of the forums. There are no "open public" forums any more. That should, I hope, solve the problem.

Anyone who wants to register in the next couple of weeks, though, please be patient. All three admins are very busy right now and permission may be slow in coming. As it happens, we all have urgent and important personal and/or family matters to attend to, so we might not check the Administrator e-mail for a while. Thanks for your understanding.

In the meanwhile, don't let that keep our regular members from going on chatting merrily. Very Happy

This board has been very quiet lately, except for Seed and a couple of others - and a bunch of prospective "new members". Most of the time, those were ads for Viagra or such, or people interested exclusively in sex, with dubious e-mail addresses. We admins have zapped them all at the rate of one or two per day.

I checked the latest candidate's profile. "Tardtenha88", though a "suspicious" username (it doesn't mean anything, in Vietnamese or any other language we know), doesn't seem to come loaded with dangerous luggage. So we're prepared to activate the account but first, would Tardtenha88 send us an e-mail at Avenueviet@AvenueViet.com to let us know how s/he got interested in our board and how s/he intends to participate to the debates in our various forums? If we don't get any explanatory e-mail, the account will be deleted.

If this is a genuinely interested new member who wants to participate, we will welcome him/her and apologize for our suspicions. But we've had too many spams to blindly accept new members with strange usernames. Thanks for your understanding.

We had as many participating, active members as we have would-be spam members... Sigh... Every time I check in, there's a couple of prospective members, whose e-mail addresses of websites turn out to be spam, porn or spyware.

Between the other admins and myself (thanks, fellow admins!) we've refused entry to 17 such "candidates" in the past 3 weeks or so. dead

But apart from Seed, nobody else seems to post these days. Where are you all? Isn't there anything noteworthy happening in the political, newsy, entertainment or joke-sharing worlds? wonder

You're right, DoanDu dear. But I wish they would leave us alone. I guess all other chat sites have the same problem, but I don't see why they insist on bugging AV, we're such a small website and not a good potential market for them at all. Today we had a record of 4 "new" members in just a few hours. I don't even bother zapping from the members list any more (unless the username is offensive or just too nonsensical to tolerate), I just deny them access, and delete any website address they post, so it does them no good to apply for membership on AV. Twisted Evil

Anyway, just in case we miss some of the url's, I repeat my warning, never go visit the sites posted unless the poster is a genuine member we know from before this wave of spams.

I am actually glad of those spam registrations (j/k)! Without them there would be almost no activity at all on the site!! bleh

As it is, there were over 45 "new members" in just the two short weeks I was away. And less than a dozen posts by "real" members. Rolling Eyes

I zap the "new" members as fast as they come on, but they keep on coming. Sigh...

Goodness me, I thought we had more or less contained the Spam problem to about half a dozen "attempts" a day.

In the last couple of days, there's been almost 50 a day. The Admins responsible of zapping those spam would-be members are spending almost an hour every day just getting rid of them and banning their IPs when they have the misfortune of trying to log in when one of us is on-line at the same time.

It must be the approach of the holicay season or something. On too of the usual porn and pharmaceuticals, we have all sorts of offers, Internet services, toys, clothes, you name it.

Russia and the Eastern European countries (Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Azerbaijan) are the worst offenders. A few South-American countries (Brazil is very persistent) and Middle-Eastern countries (Israel, Yemen). So how many Vietnamese - or even Harry Potter fans - do you think there could be in Yemen?
